Military culture effects on mental health and help-seeking

WithWalter Busuttil

The military population is unique. Many of the behaviours determining help-seeking and engagement in mental health treatment in serving personnel and veterans can be understood by virtue of cultural characteristics moulded by military training, experiences surrounding exposure to military operations and combat and breaking of secure attachments when leaving the military. An understanding of these factors is essential to the clinical management of veterans’ mental health and so is discussed in this chapter.
