ABSTRACT

There is an apparent paradox: there has been an increase in diseases related to lifestyle and environmental problems, while at the same time there has been a growth in the number of initiatives undertaken at both national and international levels to develop strategies for the promotion of sustainability and health respectively. How can this be? Our answer to this question is that the two types of strategy have not been integrated. This is despite the fact that the problems often have the same cause, namely humans’ productive transformation of nature resulting from an increasingly intensified process of industrialisation.
