Dirty Nursing: Containing Defilement and Infection Control Practices

ByAllison Roderick

In the organization of the clinic and the movement of health care away from the municipality of family, wife and mother, was the emergence of institutions to house the sick and the infirm. In this present age in the developed world we see a falling away of traditional diseases and illnesses – such as measles, dysentery, consumption and the emergence of ‘super bugs’ such as Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and the ever fearful and worrying risk of mutating viruses such as H1N5 (Bird Flu) or H1N1 (Human Swine Flu). This chapter is an attempt to understand infection control practices as experienced by the nurses in an intensive care unit (ICU).
