This chapter assists Western-trained managers to understand the Chinese boss better and to make available tools and techniques to help with working closely and effectively with your Chinese boss. It discusses the management philosophies that characterise the Western and Chinese business environments, and identification of some gaps, issues and challenges for those managers operating in the other environment that is for Western-trained managers working in Chinese businesses and for Chinese-trained managers working in Western businesses. In a Western-managed bidding environment, it is very common to ask external parties to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before starting any commercially sensitive discussion. The Western-trained boss will use advanced management tools such as the Balanced Score Card, or KPIs to measure staff performance. If the staff member does go beyond his authorised level, the Western-trained boss will use counselling, closer supervision or, for major transgression, demotion, transfer or dismissal.
