ABSTRACT

The purpose of the African Standby Force (ASF) is to provide the African Union with capabilities to respond to conflicts through the deployment of peacekeeping forces and to undertake interventions pursuant to Articles 4(h) and (j) of the Constitutive Act of the African Union (AU) (African Union 2002). The ASF is intended for rapid deployment for a multiplicity of peace support operations that may include, inter alia, preventive deployment, peacekeeping, peace building, post-conflict disarmament, demobilization, reintegration and humanitarian assistance.
