Open Archives in France: An Overview of the Academic Sector

At the end of the 1980s the world of research and libraries faced a significant increase in the cost of subscriptions to scientific journals. At the same time, the arrival of the Internet gave rise to new methods of communicating information. These two phenomena merged together and the concept of open access was born: free, immediate access to research results. By making their publications accessible online to all web users, researchers are enabling the dissemination of their research amongst other researchers all over the world, whatever the information budget of their own institution.
