Resisting ‘Bare Life’: Prisoners’ Agency in the New Prison Culture Era in Colombia

From the beginning of the twenty-first century, the Colombian prison system has gone through significant alteration in both scale and in nature. As the prison population tripled, the embedded prison culture underwent a dramatic change as a result of the New Prison Culture reforms – a ‘modernization’ policy inspired by the US Federal Bureau of Prisons. The implementation of the US model did not just represent macro-changes in the Colombian prison infrastructure and rules: it has had very concrete effects on the prisoners’ experience of incarceration and the manner in which they deploy their agency in this much more restrictive setting.
