ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses whether cities be happy places, and what are the features that can make cities happy places for those who live there. Happiness is a state of being that can be enhanced and supported by the nature and design of the cities that people live in, and in the lives that the city encourages them to lead. The chapter explores what it is that helps engender 'happiness' in children in the built environments. It focuses on 'fun' and happiness in cities, showcasing some of the ways that Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand creates happy, fun spaces, places and happenings for its children. The chapter explores what the circumstances and the spatial components of city landscapes might be that contribute to both happiness and wellbeing. It considers how professionals working in urban environments might follow Bhutan's lead with its 'gross national happiness index' and design cities with happiness creation for its citizens as a core value.
