Africa and Millions of Chinese Migrants
The entry of China into the World Trade Organisation (WTO) as elaborated on in Chapter 3 of this book also marked the beginning of China’s version of its globalization, called Zou Chuqu, meaning “go global” (Brautigam, 2009). This “go global” policy by the Chinese government evolved from Deng Xiaoping’s “Open Door” policies. It is a deliberate initiative aimed at getting Chinese companies to establish themselves internationally, creating trade and investment as well as jobs for Chinese. The immediate focus of the policy was on Africa, a continent neglected by the West, as observed by Chinese leadership. The Chinese leaders were also aware of Africa’s rich natural resources, which they need for their own growth.
