The curvatures of salvation: Messiaen, Stockhausen, and Adams
In our age salvation is a much a theme as it was in any other. Salvation can come from literally any direction and take many shapes or forms. Regardless of whether we understand the term as deliverance or redemption, the contemporary world is full of salvation narratives: the lottery, surviving cancer, fundraising for good causes, the I-shall-overcome storylines of reality TV or, for that matter, the musical breakthrough of amateur singer Susan Boyle. As a matter of fact, under the right circumstances a vague smile on someone’s face may unwittingly provoke a salvific turn-around in the life of someone else.
