ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the development of a paper delivered at the 2013 UK Higher Education Academy conference Creative Teaching for Creative Learning in Higher Academic Music Education, which took place at the University of York, UK. Creativity is active: it necessitates an engagement with an object or idea on a deeper level than just recognising its existence. It is possible to experience any context as being in some way educational. Creative thinking may employ 'logic, intuition, knowledge and experimentation to bring together many things'. The line between curricular music and extracurricular musical activities can be less distinct than in other subjects. Performance and management-based activities require a level of professionalism through the commitment both require over an extended period. By learning creatively, the influences one is able to accumulate can only be more numerous and varied, thus offering greater potential for personal and professional development.
