ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on the European Co-operation Long-Term in Defence (EUCLID RTP), Military Applications for virtual environment (VE) Techniques in Logistics and Intelligence (MARVEL) research project with the objective of demonstrating the feasibility and use of virtual environments in military decision making. For the VE design, prototypes of the virtual environment were built and evaluated with intelligence officers in workshops. Military intelligence is an area where information load to intelligence officers has increased radically due to advancements in the technology of sensors and data gathering techniques. A typical military scenario has been used to evaluate and compare a 2D battle management system with the VE demonstrator. An intelligence military officer should be able to interact with the VE in order to produce mission plans. The MARVEL project has demonstrated the application of 3D/VR techniques to military intelligence decision making.
