ABSTRACT

The most direct approach to situation awareness (SA) is to focus on the contents of awareness itself, that is, to assess how well the participant's mental representations of the situation fit the facts of the situation, or the ground truth. The task of situation assessment is to arrive at a mentally perceived situation with a full understanding of its implications. Nevertheless, there is a degree of equivalence in the fact that both signal detection and situation assessment involve discrimination. There are also parallels between the types of error that can be made in signal detection and situation assessment. The Limited Objective Experiments (LOE2) analysis activity was to focus on the human issues of SA and shared awareness. Signal Detection Theory (SDT) is not merely a theory but also a mathematical technique for analysing perceptual performance.
