ABSTRACT

The entire issue of organisational performance starts with the board and, as the quote from Sir John Harvey-Jones makes clear, ‘the buck stops’ with the chairman. Ultimately it is the chairman who sets the tone for any organisation. The very first words in this book are a quote from Sir John Harvey-Jones about the role of a company’s chairman. I chose this quote very deliberately because it opens a focus on the conflicting roles that are filled by directors – and especially the chairman. But it’s not just the chairman who can have conflicting roles.
