ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the plethora of equipment that surrounds the patient throughout diagnosis, treatment and recovery. It describes clearly the strangeness of coming to terms with the processes, the technology and even the names of the technology and procedures. Diagnostic equipment is used for testing various levels of functioning, for example hearing, swallowing and heart rate. A restorative device is used in occupational therapy (OT) that involves the upper body, physical therapy for the lower body and speech therapy for helping with talking, swallowing and breathing. One piece of equipment used in OT is the sling. Another piece of OT equipment is a machine that is like an arm bicycle. One of the most interesting objects of restorative equipment is the electric wheelchair. The Expiratory Muscle Strength Trainer is a device to help patients increase breathing strength. Patients blow into a tube and when the exhalation is strong, the device will make a sound.
