chapter  11
Continuing Professional Development for the Musician as Teacher in a University Context
Pages 16

Although UK higher education academic staff receive institutional training and development opportunities, the situation for instrumental and vocal teachers is variable. This chapter considers the views of such teachers, exploring their definitions of professional development and examining issues of responsibility for it, barriers towards undertaking it and aspects of their work that might benefit from it. Findings show that teachers have varying development needs but the issue of career progression may be of less consideration than aspects relating to training. Institutions should be prepared to invest in instrumental and vocal teachers and should work with them in developing a range of formal and informal opportunities for professional development.
