ABSTRACT

I will describe and discuss two events that link the opera Einstein on the Beach and the city of Belgrade. The first event is the performance of Einstein at the 10th Belgrade International Theatre Festival (BITEF) in 1976. Since I attended this event, I will reconstruct memories and documents from that time and explain the role of Glass and Wilson’s piece in relation with Cold War politics in the second Yugoslavia. The second event is research conducted by the group Walking Theory in 2001–02. The group of young researchers developed a theoretical and practical research program connected with the interdisciplinarity and hybridity of Einstein. In other words, the aim of my essay is to highlight the active conditions of reception and reinterpretation of the opera Einstein on the Beach in two different historical moments in the very specific local environment of Belgrade.
