ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Loughborough University's current informal learning space provision on its East Midlands campus, how it aligns with the estate strategy and the challenges in quantifying, designing, maintaining and the service provision of informal learning spaces to add value. Universities report on formal learning and teaching space utilisation using the Estates Management Record, a collection initiative which began within the sector through the Association of University Directors of Estates (AUDE). Loughborough University's collaborative work stream evaluated current provision through survey data to gain an understanding of informal learning space future requirements. The chapter provides an insight from an facilities management's (FM) perspective into the development of informal learning spaces at Loughborough University's campus, East Midlands, England. It has highlighted the challenges and complexities in quantifying, designing, maintaining, and the service provision of informal learning spaces to add value, support the estate strategy and also enhance the student experience.
