ABSTRACT

Following an international security conference held in Munich in 2011 there were a number of serious questions raised about how to prevent extremism (Cameron 2011). Former American President George W. Bush stated that: ‘No group or nation should mistake America’s intentions: We will not rest until terrorist groups of global reach have been found, have been stopped, and have been defeated.’ (President George W. Bush, 6 November 2001. Cited in the National Strategy for Combating Terrorism 2003: 1). This chapter will examine the effectiveness of international strategies when it comes to tackling extremism and the threat from far right groups, including an examination of both the UK and US counterterrorism policies which have been criticised for being ill-defined and reactionary (Githens-Mazer and Lambert 2010).
