ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study on two-fold succession in a family business matriarchy: a Swedish case. This case study from Sweden illustrates three important aspects of succession in family businesses. First, succession processes includes two different dimensions: the transfer of ownership from one generation to the next, and the succession of leadership in the family firm. Second, succession processes includes stages and activities that go on for many years. The case study shows how the ongoing succession process has continued for a period of about 15 years. This case illustrates the fact that daughters are considered by the father as being the future owners/leaders of the family business, but also a situation where daughters take over if there is no competition from sons. The chapter shows that it can be fruitful to recognize that a society that, on surface, complies with the ideals of gender equality, such as the Swedish society, might harbor traditional gender structures that influence activities.
