A Gender Inequality Historical Database for Latin America

ByGastón Díaz

This chapter presents the format and content of the database as it stands now and suggests a path for its future extension. It outlines the ongoing effort to construct the Latin American Historical Gender Inequality Database. The chapter provides explanation of the database in its current form, which includes an outline of the type of information that can be found and the sources used in its construction. The database contains national level information for each country, divided into five sections: population, education, health, political representation and labour market participation. The chapter highlights some potential problems with the main sources from which the data were drawn. The information comes mostly from country government sources as well as from international databases, but further research is needed to broaden the scope of sources, extend the existing time series, introduce new variables and expand the set of countries.
