ABSTRACT

Italy is characterized by a very uneven distribution of total working time by gender (Addabbo 2003, Istat 2008a). The amount of unpaid working time provided by Italian women and the gender gap in unpaid work provision are higher than in other European countries (Eurostat 2008, Istat 2008b). This uneven distribution persists when women carry the double burden of paid and unpaid work, leading to a heavier total workload for females than their partners. Interestingly, comparing the time allocations of European and American women, reveals that Italian women do even more household work than their US conterparts (Boeri, Burda and Kramarz 2008).
