ABSTRACT

Eradication of poverty in all its forms is the ultimate goal of social work and social development. In the midst of an ongoing recession and a scenario of multiple crises, the international community is challenged to combine efforts to accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goal e.g. to halve absolute poverty rates globally until the year 2015. With increasing inequalities in and between countries, there is a need of social protection policies grounded in values of social justice and human rights with a strong state commitment towards universal programmes.
