Regional Integration and Income Disparities: The Lessons of Europe for East Asia
Regional integration is a process through which political and economic interests should be combined with regional identities, because, without collective identities, countries are not tied to each other. Regional identity, however, is based on regional solidarity, as the maintenance of a nation as a permanent entity requires national solidarity. This solidarity implies that through harmonious and balanced development, there must be an equality of living standards across people and the region. This is why income disparities across nations or regions should be addressed with regard to the question of regional integration.
