ABSTRACT

The development of competence is one of the key challenges facing individuals and organizations. Much has been written on this subject but the concept of competence remains one of the most diffuse terms in the organizational and occupational literature

Much has been written about the competencies of project managers and literature is emerging in relation to portfolio management competencies. However, to date very little has been written about the competencies of programme managers. This chapter examines the notions of programme management competence and will identify a number of approaches for developing, improving and assessing competence. It will discuss potential barriers to competence development. The chapter will also examine current and emerging competence standards that have been developed to articulate the expected performance of programme managers in industry.
