ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some of the needs of individuals and current good practice available within the library and information services (LIS) profession in the areas of recruitment and selection. The fundamental boundaries of good recruitment and selection are set through national standards hosted by the Management Standards Centre. These are supported by, and meet the requirements of, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Ideally the team should set short-listing and interview dates prior to advertising so that they can be included in the advert. Many private sector organizations and small businesses will focus on one-to-one interviewing. Induction training needs to be structured to take into account both the needs of the organization and the individual. Quality induction programmes can also be linked to qualifications such as the National Open College Network (NOCN) or City and Guilds certificates.
