Introducing the research subject, this chapter places this work within recent academic discussions on Central and Eastern European regional development. Discussing notions of transition with highlights on evolutionary economic geography and the varieties of capitalism debate, it also sets out the aims and scope of the book, and offers an introduction to the following chapters.
