ABSTRACT

In CEE, regime changes and deepening globalisation have transformed the priorities of transport network development, a mixture of implementing EU-supported community objectives and meeting rapidly growing domestic demand. This has resulted in the prioritisation of main transport corridors, pushing the modal split towards motorway networks and air traffic, and away from rail and inland water transport. However, this shift has not contributed to closing regional development gaps, while ignoring more environmentally friendly transportation modes. Future development must consider the importance of so far neglected connections towards emerging global mega-regions: the growth of (East) Asia, and the potential of Africa and the Middle East.
