ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses creativity and culture-based development in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Its theoretical and empirical focus is on how creativity and culture-led spatial policies reproduce geographically uneven development. The chapter argues that the new development paths based on creativity and culture reproduce regional inequalities and urban–rural differences of capital accumulation. Subsequently, the chapter focuses on how cultural mega-projects and mega-events re-scale governance across the macro-region. The last section of the chapter analyses the CEE specificities of new social movements against cultural redevelopment.
