ABSTRACT

A number of arguments support the implementation of virtual teams. High on the agenda is the agility that virtual teams deliver to an organization—the ability to quickly and effectively react to fast-changing market conditions and demands. Finding the right people for the job presents an extra opportunity for organizations that have become so large that they are not sure who is expert in what. The electronic network is used to connect the islands of ability and knowledge that will deliver the best possible solutions—and with the most energy and motivation. The electronic network that connects team members is an ideal means for rapidly spreading best practice and new ideas throughout a company. The tangible costs of the traditional and virtual solutions to team working should be carefully identified and analysed. Virtual solutions are designed to save an organization money while delivering additional benefits, but the predominant costs of implementation may not be financial.
