ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the implication for individual and communal learning, particularly within secondary education in Zimbabwe, as well as for sustainable development as a whole. The Chikhawo permaculture project in Malawi is an example of community-based learning that has succeeded. As permaculture focuses on addressing the problems of the environment so as to combat climate change, projects are therefore designed so as to turn around the effects of such. Unlike the community of farmers at the Chikhawo Permaculture Project, the community at St Vincent's High School is made up of teachers and students. Such community-based learning was transferred to Zimbabwe through the activities of the Fambidzanai Permaculture Centre, which helps communities in Zimbabwe manage their environment. Schools and Colleges Permaculture Programme (SCOPE) is a project of environmental education. It is jointly run by the Zimbabwe Institute of Permaculture (ZIP) and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
