ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses a subject area which has often been neglected in the context of rural immigration, namely the situation of highly skilled immigrants. Will they settle with their families in communities which are far from large towns or cities? What do their integration processes in rural communities look like? Would they like extended work contracts in this kind of space, and if so, under what conditions? These are some of the questions to which there are few answers at present. Hence, the aim of this chapter is to shed some light on these concerns, drawing on a case study of a particular group of qualified immigrants in Quebec’s rural areas, immigrant physicians. A key interest here is to identify some of the basic conditions required to maximize the retention of this group.
