The 2001 Census provided the following information on the Scottish population by ethnic group: 88 per cent (about 4,500,000 people) of the population were recorded as White Scottish, seven per cent as White British and one per cent as White Irish. 1.5 per cent (78,000) of the population had been recorded as Any Other White Background. The minority ethnic population constituted the small percentage of two per cent (100,000), mainly comprising people from Pakistani, Chinese, Indian and mixed ethnic groups (Scottish Executive 2004).
