ABSTRACT
Island cultural heritage and landscape identity are precious values that need to be preserved. They are exclusive to each island, yet they embed strong island character. Island local communities have maintained a cultural identity that is reflected in landscape characters and patterns, and this is particularly evident in small and mediumsized European islands. By analysing the perception of islanders and visitors, these characters and patterns can be read, together with the heritage and identity values that people attach to them.
