ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on two main sources: the results of FARMTRANSFERS research and forty years of experience, including twenty-four years as a practicing attorney and founder and administrator of the Beginning Farmer Center located at Iowa State University. It describes selected findings from the international research and selected findings from three states in the United States. The chapter discusses educational techniques that address several issues identified by the FARMTRANSFERS project. The identification and enumeration of the values of the individuals, the family and the farm business are expressed in the mutually agreed upon vision of the future of the individuals, the family and the farm business. Creating a vision statement for the farm family business begins with the creation of a vision statement for the individuals involved in the farm business. An individual vision statement should describe with particularity and specificity the future that is envisioned and one's role in that future.
