ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a subject that has continuously engaged the minds of development scholars and practitioners. It begins with an examination of the importance of national culture, followed by the role of economics in today’s world. Theoretical foundations regarding the potential links between economics and national development are laid. A question that is asked in this regard is whether certain types of culture perform better economically, and within this context the concepts of values and attitudes are discussed in detail. Subsequently, there is a focus on how these issues are pertinent to the economies of the developing world, with an attempt to determine how we can propel national development through culture. Finally, the chapter proposes a holistic approach to the culture-national development relationship.
