A Single Text or a Single Meaning: Multilingual Interpretation of EU Legislation and CJEU Case Law in National Courts

In her influential work on legal translation Susan Šarčević (1997: 218) identified diverging interpretations of international provisions in national courts as a serious problem, threating the achievements of the translators. She argued that national courts tend to employ their own methods of interpretation, rarely consulting other language versions of the provision than their own. Drawing on Tabory (1980: 195), Šarčević pointed to the need for a uniform interpretation of international provisions.
