ABSTRACT

Empowering human society to engage in sustainable development requires improving the methods by which we gain understanding of the impact of human activities on the urban environment. This chapter addresses this issue, and proposes educational activities that contribute to an improved environmental understanding. It discusses the relationship between education and sustainable cities and analyzes the historical events that draw attention to the weaknesses of old educational paradigms. Environmental education, a means of implementation of sustainability, has been suggested as a key element to improve the capacity of the people to address environment and development issues and to promote sustainability. The chapter suggests a new constructionist theory of education and presents a case study describing the implementation of constructionist ideas and the use of technological tools in the environmental education learning process. Constructionist learning is precisely about encouraging people to build their own knowledge through personal experiences, by constructing an object or a project with the support of technological tools.
