ABSTRACT

This chapter uses the community journalism massive open online courses (MOOC), created by Cardiff University, as a case study in how social media, built into the curriculum infrastructure, can be used to engage learners, add value and foster new insight. Through examples of comments made and insights generated shows how this kind of reverse learning can enhance the MOOC experience and enable adaptations and additions to be made to course materials and discussion topics by educators. This 'new knowledge' generated by the MOOC created fresh narratives around community journalism, and was crowd-sourced by an internationally and socioeconomically diverse learner base. The chapter describes the case study, how this also has the effect of merging the boundaries between theory and practice. The chapter shows the examples of how an interactive and social approach led to setting up new services and improving others.
