ABSTRACT

Harambee (‘pulling together’) is a self-help movement indigenous to Kenya. It entails voluntary contributions in cash and kind (e.g. labour) to community amenities such as schools, water projects and health clinics. Almost everybody dealing with the Kenyan development prospects, problems, doing research or trying to explain about Kenya to outsiders will find it necessary to know about harambee as a development strategy. In Kenya, harambee is a way of filling needs as well as of working and living in Kenya.
