ABSTRACT

The post-Communist development of media systems has been very diverse in different post-Communist countries. The main difference can be found between those countries that became members of the EU and those that did not take EU membership as a future option. The differences are also related to various factors including dissimilarities in history and media development, the rapidity of the transformation process, and the role of foreign capital. However, in some Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries such as Hungary more partisan and conservative tendencies have received support and media legislation has been tightened.
