chapter  6
‘Doing Public Policy’ in the Political News Interview
ByJohanna Rendle-Short
Pages 20

Announcing policy information to the public is an important part of the political process. Within the Australian context, such policy announcements are frequently made through the news media, including printed media, television and radio broadcasts, or political news interviews. Although talkback radio presents a legitimate forum for the discussion of national public affairs and provides a way to break policy initiatives to the wider voting public (Ward 2002), this chapter will show how a very different forum, the political news interview, can also be a site for constructing, shaping and reflecting on political policy for, and on behalf of, the overhearing listening audience.
