East Indies, West Indies: Garcia de Orta and the Spanish Treatises on Exotic Materia Medica

As I have suggested, it can hardly be fortuitous that precisely these three works were published within a period of no more than 15 years aer the publication of the Colóquios and the opening up of the transpacic route by the Spaniards. Within the limits of the room available in this chapter, I shall try to examine the contexts in which these three works were produced and the proles of their three authors. I shall also propose to interpret them within the complicated interaction of political, commercial and cultural interests of the Portuguese and Castilian Crowns during these 15 years that were so crucial for the futures of both of them.
