ABSTRACT

This chapter assists the employers toward becoming knowledgeable about which type of professional and which type of assessment will best suit the needs of workplace stakeholders when attempting to best help employees remain at or return to work. It focuses on the specifics of psychological, not psychiatric, assessment. The chapter discusses all of the aspects of vocational assessment; we believe that three of the most commonly used vocational interest inventories used by psychologists include the Canadian Work Preference Inventory (CWPI), the Reading Free Vocational Interest Inventory-Second Edition (RFVII-2), and the Self-Directed Search (SDS). When completing a psychological assessment, the final component of the assessment may include a short evaluation of vocational interests. This section of the psychological assessment would be driven by the referral question, as well as the current needs of the referred employee. Psychological assessment can provide valuable information required by employers for the purpose of adequately addressing employees' accommodation needs.
