ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an introduction to the Whiteface mountain Ski center and the legal framework. The Whiteface Mountain Ski Center, promoted as the 'Olympic Mountain', is part of the Olympic winter sports complex centered on Lake Placid in the state of New York. The on-mountain facilities consist of the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center on the east side of the mountain and a paved road constructed in 1927, Veterans Memorial Highway, that climbs the north side of the mountain to its summit and is open to the public during the summer months. The Whiteface Mountain Ski Center operates pursuant to an agreement between the State's Department of Environmental Conservation and Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), initially entered into on October 1982, as provided in the Public Authorities Law. The activities at the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center and its supporting communities are directly and indirectly influenced by the legal regime that governs the Adirondack Park.
