ABSTRACT

This book demonstrates the importance of multigenerational households in modern society.

Multigenerational living is commonplace in Australia, as it is in many other societies worldwide. However, the needs and experiences of the people who live in multigenerational households are often overlooked by policymakers, researchers and political representatives. This oversight is reflected in, and perhaps partly the result of, the difficulty of identifying the number and nature of multigenerational households through standardized and widely available statistical data. Yet, analysis of custom census data demonstrates that approximately 20 per cent of all Australians live in a multigenerational household, and that this has been the case for decades (Chapter 2, Burnley).
