ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the remediation of a ballet performance, beginning with an analytical comparison of three different remediations of three different performances of a single choreography of the Sacre du printemps: the so-called 'reconstruction' of Nijinsky's original version by Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer. The Joffrey Ballet version was produced by Judy Kinberg and Thomas Grimm in 1989 for a television programme dedicated to the reconstitution of the Sacre du printemps: The Search for Nijinsky's Rite of Spring. One should, however, bear in mind that Hodson and Archer's Sacre was internationally recognized as the reconstruction of Nijinsky's original. Hodson and Archer's reconstruction of the Nijinsky version opened up a new area of interpretation. However, Nijinsky reduced to a bare minimum the characters, gestures and movements tied to the ritual plot. Nijinsky would later obsessively dedicate himself to creating colourful geometric designs.
