ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book analyses how Muslim ulama' have discussed and debated the introduction of various modes of communication and information technologies, successively the printing press, photography, the cinema, radio and television, the telephone and the Internet. It also analyses the different time periods, geographical localities and theological and political camps. The book argues that technology is not good or bad in itself: it is what people do with it that counts, and the intention of the user is generally a focus of the debate. The Internet is a powerful tool for finding out and learning more about Islamic theology, but the technology can also be used with bad intentions, such as exploring un-Islamic sites and breaking the laws of Islam. The book focuses on ulama' discussing the impact, reception and use of the information and communication technologies in both historical and contemporary periods.
