ABSTRACT

This chapter examines foundational design principles that promote sustainable tall building development. It reviews a wide range of topics concerning passive and active design strategies, including daylighting and natural ventilation, facade types, high-performance glazing, solar shading, thermal chimneys, artificial lighting systems, vertical transportation and community spaces. The chapter discusses building materials, structural methods, and engineering and mechanical systems, and recycling technologies, water conservation and collection methods, and vertical landscaping. It focuses on on new technologies for harnessing renewable energies such as wind turbines, photovoltaic, biomass, and geothermal. The chapter provides sustainable site planning and design guidelines. Green design should also be tailored to meet the requirements and challenges of the specific site. Ideally, a zero-energy, zero-waste, and carbon-neutral tall building is the ultimate goal for sustainable tall buildings. Smart parking systems are being developed to help drivers find parking spots quickly, thus reducing fuel consumption, congestion, air pollution, wasted time, and associated frustration spent searching for a space.
