ABSTRACT

Mental health problems in the workplace currently represent a major cause of absence from work. This chapter presents recent studies that have led to the development of a process to assist and support the rehabilitation and return to work of employees. This process is supported by evidence-based data related to disability management and by the design, implementation, and evaluation of an integrated program of practices supporting return to work following an absence due to a mental health problem. The chapter describes the return-to-work coordinator's best practices to support the worker's rehabilitation and returns to work and assists the worker on sick leave throughout his or her return-to-work process. This process involves six major steps: reassurance practices, the central role of the direct supervisor, identifying obstacles to rehabilitation and return to work, summarizing the concerns and targets for action, meeting the direct supervisor and drafting a return-to-work plan and return to work and job retention.
